Do You Hear What I Hear?
Lyrics
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite.
Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite.
History and Meaning
A song written in October 1962 by Noël Regney (lyrics) and Gloria Shayne Baker (music) as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Regney, who had experienced the horrors of war firsthand as a member of the French underground during World War II, was deeply affected by the global tension and fear of nuclear war. The inspiration for the lyrics came to Regney after seeing mothers with their babies in strollers in New York City, which filled him with a sense of hope. Both writers were reportedly so moved by the events that they couldn't perform the entire song without becoming emotional. The Harry Simeone Chorale first recorded it in late 1962, and Bing Crosby's 1963 recording helped make it an enduring Christmas classic.
