The Happy Wanderer
Lyrics
I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
Val-deri, Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri, Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
Val-deri, Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri, Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.
History and Meaning
Original title 'Der fröhliche Wanderer.' The melody was composed by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller shortly after World War II, while the German lyrics were written by Florenz Friedrich Sigismund. Möller's sister, Edith Möller, led the Obernkirchen Children's Choir, many of whom were war orphans, and their 1953 rendition of the song achieved international fame. The cheerful song about wandering through the countryside helped foster reconciliation after the war and became a beloved anthem of joy and resilience, later adapted into English as "The Happy Wanderer" and widely sung in schools and youth groups around the world.
